A New Look for LINUXexpert.org

Hi everyone,

If the site looks different today, you’re not imagining it — we just shipped a full redesign, and I wanted to walk through what changed and why.

Why we did this

The old theme was a generic, off-the-shelf WordPress theme. It worked, but it didn’t feel like us — the colors and type had nothing to do with Linux, sysadmins, or the terminal we all live in every day. We wanted something that actually looked like it belonged to this community instead of a stock template with our logo pasted on top.

What’s new

  • A dark-first design, built around a monospace type treatment for navigation and headings and a comfortable serif for the actual reading — with a light mode toggle in the header if you’d rather read on a white background.
  • Real filtering on How-To and Study Guides. If you only care about Debian, or you’re specifically hunting for RedHat guides, the chips at the top of those archives now actually filter instead of making you scroll through everything.
  • A cleaner reading experience on individual posts — a table of contents on longer guides, and related posts at the bottom so you’re not stuck searching for the next thing to read.
  • A properly responsive layout. The old site was rough on mobile; this one isn’t.

What didn’t change

Every article, how-to, and lesson is exactly where it always was — same URLs, same content. This was a visual overhaul, not a rewrite of what we’ve built here over the years.

Also — the strong password generator (/strong-password-generator/) tool is back and working if you noticed it was broken for a bit. That’s on us; it’s fixed now.

As always, thanks for reading, and thanks to everyone who’s supported the site. If something looks broken or weird on your device, let us know through the suggestions page (/suggestions/) and we’ll get it sorted.
